Financial Support During a Higher Research Degree

This page will provide you with the basics on funding for your Higher Research Degree. There are links and information regarding tuition fees (International Students only) and scholarship information, which will hopefully help you in the application process.

Please note that you must be planning to study full time to gain a scholarship, though you may be able to work up to 20 hours a week on top of your research commitments.

Scholarships are highly competitive and applicants will be competing for these same scholarships University-wide. Therefore, even if you have an Hons I degree, you are not guaranteed to receive one, unless you are offered a place on a research project which already has the funding available from other sources.

Elements that can help your application include previous work experience in the area, publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations on the proposed subject.

But don't be put off - the Faculty has been very successful in obtaining scholarships and you can do it!

Remember - your potential supervisor should help you with your application and there are postgrad advisors willing to offer help and support too - you are not alone!

Tuition Fees

Scholarships

What should I expect to pay?

Research higher degrees have no tuition fees for Australian residents/citizens, other than student subscriptions, such as University of Sydney Union membership.

Fees do apply, however, if you are an international student. These may be covered by a scholarship in addition to receiving a stipend for living costs - you must check with the scholarship provider. See International Office website for more details.

Scholarships

There are a number of scholarship options available to support yourself whilst undertaking a higher research degree. The main way to apply for one of these is through the VCRS/APA/UPA route as only one application is needed to be considered for each of these awards.

To be eligible for these awards, you must have a first class honours degree or research masters*.

If you have an Honours II degree, you can still apply for a research project, but it will need to have a scholarship attached.

If you don't have an Honours degree, you can do a Research Masters degree. A completed Research Masters degree will be considered as HI equivalent should you then want to undertake a PhD.

For more information on the various scholarship options, see the information provided by the Research Office at: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ro/training/index.shtml

Or speak to one of the Faculty's Postgraduate Advisors.

*Postgraduate Coursework students need to have an overall WAM of >80% for it to count as HI equivalent and must have a significant research component, which is relevant to their future PhD research project, as one of their units of study.
