Summary
The Risk Analysis unit of study will cover the following topics:
- role of risk analysis in biosecurity;
- qualitative versus quantitative approaches to risk analysis;
- procedure for the conduct of a risk analysis using specific examples;
- development of quantitative risk analysis models.
Learning Outcomes
After studying this unit you will be able to:
- explain the terminology and major concepts, principles, tools and techniques used in risk analysis;
- discuss and evaluate the main approaches to risk analysis in animal health (including veterinary public health) and trade;
- explain the strengths and weaknesses of some of the tools used in risk assessment;
- describe tasks and issues associated with risk management and risk communication;
- and explain the relationship between risk perception and risk communication and discuss approaches to good risk communication.
Assumed Knowlege
Your studies in Veterinary Epidemiology 1, Hazards to Human and Animal Health, Animal Health Economics, and Animal Health Policy Development will have provided some of the basic knowledge and skills required for this unit. Some of you may have also spent one week on risk analysis in the elective unit on Aquatic Animal Health.
Assessment
Assessment of the Risk Analysis unit of study will include:
- participation in weekly online discussions and learning activities (15%);
- a group assignment (40%);
- an individual assignment (45%).
