Extramural Practical Work Placements

Lists of the various practical management activities and problems with which you should be familiar are given in the guidelines below. You must study these templates carefully, prior to attending placements. Note that not all topics in the guide will apply to each property you visit, but you should produce as comprehensive an account as you possibly can. The object of the exercise is not simply to collect information, but to gain an insight into the scope and limitations of a particular property according to its topography, soil type, prevailing climate, etc. Try to obtain ‘in depth' information about the management of animals, their place in the farm economy, etc, and discuss practices with the property owner/manager so that you will be able to comment critically on the management of the property in your report.

Assessment Guidelines
Assignments that address issues related to nutrition, reproduction, animal welfare, or scope for veterinary involvement on the farm are to be submitted in the second week of Semester 1 of fourth year. One essay of 500 words maximum must be submitted for each of your Horse, Dairy Cattle, Beef Cattle, Sheep, Pig, and Poultry placements. The essay should be written in a format that would be suitable as a report for the manager or owner of the property that you visited. You are encouraged to talk to the property owner and identify a suitable topic for your report. The report should be substantiated by relevant research articles from the scientific literature. Your report should also include:
* your signed declarations
* a summary page of properties visited
* a confidential assessment of the experience for each property visited

Submission of all completed assignments, must include an Assignment Cover Page and be submitted via WebCT. Students are reminded that a mark is awarded for the completed practical reports in Fourth Year and the mark appears in the academic transcript. Marks are awarded as a weighted average for each species based on presentation, content, critical analysis of the property, etc. Students may be required to present themselves for interview and/or rewrite one or more reports if the practical book is unsatisfactory. Of the grade awarded, 5% will be deducted for each day of late submission.

A prize, the Baker and Ridley Memorial Prize, is awarded to the student who submits the best practical book. The value of the prize is $150.

Students are required to sign a declaration that they have reached the required level of proficiency in each technique for each of the prescribed species; the declaration appears at the bottom of each list of Basic Handling Skills.
All students will be required to present themselves for testing of Basic Handling Skills at the beginning of Year 4. This may involve travel to the University Farms, Camden, and will involve a test of a random selection of skills on some or all of the designated species (Cattle and Sheep). Students will be expected to demonstrate skills to the required level of proficiency. No grades will be awarded but any student failing to meet the prescribed standard will be required to undertake remedial practical work during Year 4. Students will be expected to maintain required standards; some tests may occur during Years 4 units of study and students not meeting appropriate standards may be required to undertake further remedial practical work.

Plagiarism

All instances of plagiarism will be dealt with severely. It is deemed acceptable for students who attend properties together, to present the same descriptions of the property; however, critical analysis/Property Management Reports must be your own work. All collaborative work on the property description must be noted on your assignment cover page, each of the co-authors must be listed. All material and sources used in the preparation of each workbook must also be acknowledged if not your own work and must be quoted.

Plagiarism is a serious issue. The Faculty and the University take matters of plagiarism very seriously. Plagiarism within your Animal Husbandry Practical Report can lead to: failure of the unit of study, a letter of ‘Good Standing’ not provided to the Board of Veterinary Surgeons by the Dean on graduation, or expulsion from the Degree. A student failed this unit of study in 2004 and 2008.

Academic Honesty in Coursework (plagiarism).
