OHS
To gain an understanding of OHS issues on farms you are required to read the ‘Farm Safety & Safe Operating Procedures Booklet’, before commencing any Extramural Placement.

Students with disabilities
Students with permanent or temporary disabilities which prevent them from performing animal handling procedures, or which may risk further injury, should contact Ms Stephanie Betts before either engaging in extramural practical work or undertaking Skills Testing. Special provisions can be made.
Appropriate Attire
It is an issue of occupational health and safety and professional attitude that appropriate attire be worn when attending extramural placements. On farms, overalls and safety shoes and when necessary examination gloves are appropriate. Insurance coverage should not be compromised by failure to be suitably equipped for the work that you are undertaking. When attending external veterinary practices, a clean white laboratory coat and closed shoes are appropriate.
Insurance
Whilst on extramural placements you are covered by university insurance policies covering students on work experience placements. Note that insurance cover is only provided to students who are currently enrolled, but includes the vacation period between successive periods of enrolment. Students who defer for a period of one semester or more are permitted to undertake the required extramural work but they will not be covered by the University's insurance policy. Such students are strongly advised to take out appropriate personal liability cover. If in any doubt, please contact the Faculty Office for advice.
