VETS4331 2010 Animal Husbandry - Electives
Extramural Practical Work Placements - Electives
Students are able to undertake 28 days of discretionary/elective work at approved commercial properties and/or industry and wildlife placements at which they will be covered by the University’s Insurance Policies. No provision is made in the minimum period for work with native fauna, zoo animals, marine animals, or other exotic species. Students are encouraged to voluntarily gain experience with such animals if possible, but such periods of work cannot be substituted for work with the major domestic species.
Students are encouraged to undertake placements to gain experience in areas that may be of future interest during their career as a Veterinarian. It is necessary if you wish to undertake specific electives during 5th Year that you have adequate experience in the field of your choice.
You can use accredited properties or source non database organisations. The Orange Horse Course is recommended for those interested in horses. On completion of these placements, students are required to complete an online Self Assessment / Skills Sheet, a Feedback Form and have their supervisor complete a Supervisor’s Report. No assignments are required.
Use of Non Database Sites
Non database properties may be used for elective placements only.
Students must have completed by the own/manager of any site they are intending to an Animal Husbandry Property/Farm Profile Survey and a Principals Agreement Form
Appropriate Attire
It is an issue of occupational health and safety and professional attitude that appropriate attire be worn when attending extramural placements. On farms, overalls and safety shoes and when necessary examination gloves are appropriate. Insurance coverage should not be compromised by failure to be suitably equipped for the work that you are undertaking. When attending external veterinary practices, a clean white laboratory coat and closed shoes are appropriate.
