Research Interests

Dick graduated with a BVSc from the University of Melbourne in 1967, commencing his career with the Victorian Department of Agriculture undertaking laboratory work before moving to Queensland where he took up the role of Veterinary Officer with the Commonwealth Department of Primary Industry. He then moved to the NSW government laboratory at Wollongbar to continue with diagnostic work involving domestic mammals, poultry and wildlife. Whilst at Wollongbar Dick moved to NSW Fisheries where he took leadership of the Aquatic Animal Health Unit and was Project Leader for international and domestic research projects on aquatic animal diseases, laboratory investigations of aquatic animal disease outbreaks. He was also technical advisor on aquatic animal disease control policies in NSW.

Dick’s special interests are in characterising aquatic animal disease processes at individual animal and population levels, developing and implementing science-based health management programs for aquatic animals and managing aquatic animal research and development projects in regional countries. Dick joined the Faculty in June 2007 to coordinate the project funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in Indonesia for improving productivity and profitability of smallholder shrimp aquaculture and related agribusiness. Previous to this Dick had coordinated another ACIAR project from James Cook University for the development and delivery of practical disease control programs for small-scale shrimp farmers in Indonesia, Thailand and Australia.
