Research Interests

Following the completion of Veterinary Degree, Marta started her research career in animal production at the University Autonoma of Barcelona, Spain, working on a research project about livestock traceability and funded by the European Community.

While undertaking her PhD Marta was appointed as the administrative manager of this project where she coordinated ten institutions within six European Union countries. Her PhD was based on the study of swine traceability using conventional and electronic identification systems. During her studies she evaluated the use of different identification methodologies for swine in order to assure animal and animal product traceability from origin to consumer. Marta had also completed her MSc on animal production and spent four motnhs at Wisconsin University in the United States.

During the last part of her PhD she was offered a research job in Australia working for a company specialising in electronic identification of livestock where she was responsible for all research and development. Marta joined the Farm Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Group in September 2006 to work on an Australian Biosecurity CRC project focused on swine traceability, biosecurity and disease surveillance among small-holding pig producers, with the main objective of improving early detection of exotic animal diseases. In October 2007, Marta was appointed as the ABCRC Epidemiology Research Fellow. During her postdoctoral and research fellowship, Marta has been working on public health and epidemiology and developing qualitative and quantitative risk analysis skills.
